Dog DNA Test FAQs:
1. Is shopping with Happy Dog DNA Safe? Yes! We use PayPal to process your transaction so your personal account and credit card remain safe and secure.
2. Do I have to have a PayPal account to make a purchase? No. PayPal allows you to pay using your credit card without registering.
3. Can you confirm that my dog is pure bred? No. The DNA Breed Identification test is designed for the sole purpose of identifying breeds found in the genetic composition of mixed breed dogs. The test can only identify breeds from those in the database which are present. If only one breed is detected, it could be that there are breeds present that are not in our database or that there is DNA present from another breed but in amounts too small to be detected.
4. Can I collect the DNA myself? Yes, the collection process is very simple and can be performed at home by following the enclosed instructions. Simplified dog DNA test instructions.
5. Does DNA collection hurt my pet? The DNA collection is painless. The gentle swab gently removes skin cells from your dog's cheek which minimizes any chance for infection or irritation.
6. How do I send the DNA back to BioPet? Once you have collected your DNA sample, simply put the swab back in the paper sleeve and place it and the Customer Information Card in the enclosed prepaid envelope. It typically takes about one week for the DNA samples to arrive at the lab.
7. How long does it take to get the results? Happy Dog DNA offers super-fast USPS Priority Mail to ship your DNA Breed Identification Tests which means your test is delivered in 2-3 days (excluding Sunday). Most orders received by 3:00 p.m. Eastern Time will be shipped the same day. Typically, once the sample arrives at the BioPet Vet Lab in Knoxville, TN, results are mailed in about two weeks. Please allow time for return mail.
8. How does BioPet know which breeds are present in my dog? BioPet Vet Lab invested a considerable amount of time analyzing the DNA from purebred dogs to build up an accurate database that highlights the differences between breeds. By comparing your dog’s DNA with the database samples, BioPet Vet Lab can identify which of the 63 validated breeds are present in your dog.
9. What is the Ancestry Analysis Certificate? The results will tell you the breeds that are present in your dog’s ancestry. The results of the DNA analysis are printed on a high quality certificate suitable for framing. Ancestry Analysis Certificate.
10. Why are several breeds listed on my Ancestry Analysis Certificate, and what does the order mean? The list on the certificate shows the detected breeds in Levels, based on the percentage of DNA found. The Levels are defined as follows:
Level 1: Breed represents > 75% of your dog's DNA Level 2: Breed represents 37-74% of your dog’s DNA Level 3: Breed represents 20-36% of your dog’s DNA Level 4: Breed represents 10-19% of your dog’s DNA Level 5: Breed represents <10% of your dog’s DNA.
11. What if there are breeds in my dog that are not in your database? We believe that 92% of the mixed breed population is covered by the validated breeds. However, if there is DNA detected from a breed not in the database, it will be assigned to the most closely related breed, or to breeds further back in your dog’s ancestry. Dog Breed List.
12. How accurate is this test? It is understood that no analytical test is 100% accurate. If a breed is present in your dog that is in the database of 63 validated breeds, it should be detected. However, if DNA is found from a breed that is not in the database, it will be assigned to the most closely related breed, or to breeds that are further back in your dog’s ancestry.
13. What is Happy Dog DNA's return policy? Due to the nature of the DNA Breed Identification Test, all sales are final and no refunds will be issued after your order has been shipped. Terms and conditions of the test, as specified by BioPet Vet Lab, are detailed in the instructions provided with the test.
14. What breeds are identified by the DNA Breed Identification Test? The Dog DNA Breed ID Test compares your dog's DNA against a database of 63 breeds. This represents over 92% of the breeds that make up the American mixed- breed population. Dog Breed List.
15. Why is Pit Bull not on your list? The Validated Breeds are based on breeds recognized by the American Kennel Club® (AKC). The term “Pit Bull” has come to describe several types of dogs, often of mixed breed, that share similar physical characteristics. There are several AKC breeds with characteristics often shared by dogs referred to as “pit bull” that are in our database, such as the Boxer, Bulldog, Bull Terrier and Mastiff, so these breeds could be identified.
16 Does Happy Dog DNA ship to Canada? Yes, we do. However, because International Priority Mail is much more expensive, we will send a request for payment for $6.50 after the DNA test is purchased.
